Meet Odette

Odette is just beginning to learn what it feels like to live inside, be cared for, and have people around her for no other reason than because they love her.

She was found extremely underweight and covered in fleas, with wounds on her body and fly strike on her severely cropped ears. She appeared to have recently had puppies, although we don't know what happened to them. When she arrived at the local shelter, one of her eyes was full of discharge and she was squinting, and she later tested positive for heartworms.

Everything about Odette's condition suggested a dog who had spent much of her life outside without the care she deserved. We may never know exactly what her life looked like before she was found, but we do know that people likely hadn't given her many reasons to trust them.

And somehow, Odette is still sweet.

She's discovering cuddles and long petting sessions, settling into the routines of her foster home, and getting her first real introduction to life as an indoor dog. There's still so much we have to learn about her, but we already know this girl is going to be pretty incredible to watch blossom.

The Promise We Made to Odette

We promised Odette that she gets to stay inside.

She isn't a yard prop. She isn't a dog who belongs outside by herself watching life happen through a window or from the end of a yard.

She is family.

From here forward, her life gets to include love, care, comfort, safety, and the feeling of truly belonging somewhere.

Personality

We're still getting to know Odette, and that's part of what makes this stage of her story so special. She hasn't been in a home long enough for us to pretend we know every little thing about her yet.

What we do know is that she's loving.

For a dog who seems to have had very little experience with people being kind to her, Odette has been remarkably willing to accept that kindness now. She loves being petted and cuddled and seems to be discovering that having someone's hands on her can mean affection instead of something to worry about.

She also has one seriously adorable face. She's short and stocky with the scrunchiest, most kissable little expression, and we have a feeling there's a lot more personality waiting to come out as she becomes comfortable with this completely different way of living.

In the Home

Indoor life is still relatively new to Odette, but she's settling into her foster home well.

She does well in her kennel and is currently managed on a rotation schedule while her foster mom is home because there are other animals in the household.

Potty training is going well so far. She had only a couple of accidents when she first arrived in foster care and has continued making progress as she's learned the routine.

There are a lot of everyday things Odette may be experiencing differently for the first time. Her future family should expect to give her structure, consistency, and time to understand what's expected of her while she continues adjusting to being an indoor dog.

With Other Dogs

Odette is looking for a home where she can be the only dog.

She doesn't need canine siblings to make her life complete. This girl would much rather have her people, her own space, and all the attention to herself.

And after spending so much of her life without the kind of attention she deserved, we don't think there's anything wrong with that.

With People

Odette is loving and seems genuinely happy to discover what affection from people feels like.

She enjoys cuddling and being petted, and we're excited to see how much more of her personality comes through as she spends more time surrounded by people who treat her with kindness.

She may not have had many good experiences with humans before now, but she isn't approaching this new life as if she's holding a grudge. She's accepting the love that's finally being offered to her.

With Kids

We haven't had enough experience with Odette around children to know what her best fit would be.

She is a short, stocky, strong girl, so her size and strength should be considered when determining whether a home with younger children would be appropriate.

With Cats and Small Animals

Odette should not live with cats or small animals.

She has shown prey drive, and during her limited experience around cats she became overstimulated. A pet-free home where Odette can be the only animal is going to be the right environment for her.

Training & Care

Odette knows some basics and is treat motivated, which should make continuing her training a great way for her future family to build a relationship with her. She's also working on potty training and has been doing well as she adjusts to her foster home's routine.

Odette is heartworm positive and began her heartworm injections on September 10, 2026. Her treatment and associated activity restrictions are expected to continue through the end of October.

She does not have to wait until treatment is finished to find her forever home. Odette can be adopted before then, and Made a Promise Rescue will continue providing her remaining heartworm treatment until it is completed. Her adopter will need to follow her activity restrictions and treatment instructions during that time.

Ideal Home

Odette's ideal home is one where she gets to be the only pet and finally experience what it feels like to be at the center of someone's world.

She needs people who understand that living inside and being part of a family are still new experiences for her. Structure and consistency will help her continue learning, but so will patience and plenty of affection.

We aren't looking for a home that expects Odette to arrive knowing exactly how to be someone's house dog. We're looking for the people who will enjoy showing her.

A Note from the Foster

We're still getting to know Miss Odette, but she's already showing us a very sweet dog underneath everything she's been through.

She's settling in, enjoying affection, and figuring out this whole indoor-life thing one day at a time. And with that short, stocky body and ridiculously scrunchy little face, she's pretty difficult not to fall in love with.

Promise Pup Highlight

Odette's glow-up isn't just going to be about gaining weight or watching the physical reminders of her old life disappear.

The part we're most excited to watch is the dog underneath all of it come out.

She's already sweet. She's already accepting love. She's already settling in.

Now she gets to find out who Odette is when she's safe enough to simply enjoy being a dog.

You will be safe. You will be cared for. You will know what it feels like to be loved, cuddled, protected, and included in someone's everyday life.

Most importantly, you will never be treated like something that simply belongs in a yard again.
