Background Info:
Princess Alice came into the city pound as a stray and in terrible shape. She was very thin, quite dirty and covered in stains, perhaps indicating she was kept in close quarters or outside. We do not know much else about her previous life but she seems to have been greatly neglected and possibly mistreated. We are learning more about her every day and are working to get her cleaned up and polished like the Princess she is.
Health Condition:
Alice has recovered from the hard life she previously knew! Her happy tail is all healed and she has washed away all the days of being urine stained and emaciated. This girl is a Stunner now!
Special Needs:
Alice appears to be completely deaf. Most likely a congenital condition. Though well adapted to her disability, she did need to learn basic hand commands. However, Alice is so smart that she has since learned tricks past our wildest dreams!
Physical Description:
Alice is a medium sized princess, slightly on the smaller side, with the softest snow like white coat. If it weren't for her beautiful brown eyes you would have trouble finding this pretty lady in the snow! Alice has a brown snout with a couple pink spots where some speculate she was kissed by an angel.
Current Living Situation:
Alice has hit the jackpot with one of our great foster homes! She has adapted very well and become [pretty spoiled with rotating family members to overnight with.
Personality:
Alice does not let being deaf keep her down one bit! Alice loves her humans and wants to be near you at all times. She is a velcro dog that immediately wants to jump in your lap and give kisses but she expects them in return - so be ready to give her some loving. We couldn't have guessed how much of a lust for happiness this girl has when we first met her in that horrific condition. She actually has a smile on all the time! We should all be so lucky to have Alice's rose colored glasses on!
Behavior with people:
Alice loves her people and is always happy to see you. With Alice being deaf she will need an owner that is patient and willing to work with her on sign language commands. Our volunteers are working with her on this, but this will take time and anyone that adopts her needs to realize it may be a longer process than dogs that can hear what we are telling them. When dealing with a deaf dog situational awareness is important. For example if Alice has her back turned to you and you walk in a room, she is not going to know you are there and you need to make your presence known in a non startling way.
That said, Alice does have a tendency to be mouthy (she nibbles your hand to establish contact) and jumpy at times but we are working with her on this. We believe those to be correctable habits that many dogs have in their younger years. In her case however, voice correction is ineffective so other means of training must be used.
Behavior with children:
With Alice being deaf and the work required to help train her, she should go to a home with no children. Children like to love dogs fast and are not always the most patient with them. Alice needs mature handling and the kind of time and training little ones are simply not ready to provide.
Behavior with other dogs:
While we were told that Alice was briefly introduced to other dogs while at the city shelter and did okay, we have since discovered that just like she cannot hear humans she also can't hear a playmate dogs squeal, bark or social cues to stop playing. Having this disability makes her continue when the other dog has said "that is enough". Therefore, having a higher chance of her playmate getting agitated and an argument ensuing. We believe it is in all dogs best interest that this Princess is the only dog in her castle :)
Behavior with other animals:
We have not seen Alice interact with any other animals as of yet however with her high prey drive we suggest a home with no cats.
Training:
After much work Alice and her amazing foster mom have astonished us with all the "tricks" they have accomplished Together! Alice has mastered "sit", "down", "wait", "place", "high five", "tap paws", "bow" and Finally "Dancing"! That's right the Princess Dances! Go click the video link below and watch her do the Cha Cha at our last 2025 Bullies and Bubbles Gala in front of 200 guests!
1st 1/2 of Alice's Cha Cha Slide debut!
Best Attribute:
Princess Alice is such a lover and happy go lucky dog. Alice is the type of dog that can turn your day around as soon as you walk in the door after a long day. This girl's beaming personality is sure to be infectious and we are so blessed to get to receive the endless love she has to give.
